Acton Academy is intentionally different from a traditional school. Rather than teachers delivering lessons, learners take ownership of their education through self-paced mastery, Socratic discussions, collaborative projects, and real-world challenges.

While an understanding of education can be helpful, it is not a requirement. The most important qualities are alignment with the learner-driven philosophy, a commitment to helping young people thrive, strong leadership skills, and a willingness to learn.

Many successful founders and guides within the Acton network are not qualified teachers.

Acton Academy has developed a strong global network of founders and operators who support one another through the journey of establishing and growing learner-driven communities.

No. Acton Academy North Shore is a private education company offering a full-time, learner-driven environment that partners with families to support and enrich each young person’s unique goals and interests.

Acton Academy North Shore is part of the network of over 300 Acton Academies around the world.

We follow the same exact Learning Design and learning model that our owners helped create at the original Acton Academy campus.

Yes. Acton Academy North Shore is a private education organisation and not registered under the Education and Training Act 2020.

Therefore, each learner will need to obtain a Certificate of Exemption from the Ministry of Education.

Acton Academy operates Monday to Friday, from 8:30am - 3:15pm.

Although Acton Academy does not require a set number of attendance days, we do believe consistent attendance helps learners stay connected to their community and projects, which often rely on full team participation.

However, we believe family travel and shared experiences are valuable forms of learning, so learners can continue their work remotely through online programs and their Progress Tracking Portal.

Our learning year runs for approximately 35–40 weeks, depending on the length of each Quest cycle.

While we deeply respect Maria Montessori’s philosophy and incorporate some of her principles, Acton Academy North Shore is a unique learning environment.

We also integrate modern technology, hands-on projects, and the Socratic Method to foster critical thinking and personal growth.

We are open to Believers, Searchers and Non-Believers alike and expose children to the importance of mindful spirituality and stress the historical importance of Christianity to the development of Western Civilisation.

An independent learner is someone who can; research questions, solve problems, admit when they don't know something and figure out a solution when they hit a roadblock (without asking an adult for help), participate in discussions, and strive for mastery.

Running Partners are fellow learners who meet together regularly to set goals and hold each other accountable for meeting those goals.

Running Partners encourage and inspire each other by asking good questions, listening, and providing affirmation.

We believe learning thrives in mixed-age environments where young people can mentor and be mentored. Instead of age-based groupings, learners collaborate across a range of ages, supported by tailored resources that match their individual progress and goals.

We are not trained to serve children with serious learning disabilities.

However, we can discuss your child’s needs in more details to ensure they can be supported with the Learning Design, the processes and systems that are in place.

We believe each of our students will find a passion — something they love and have a gift to do. They will use this gift to serve others and fulfil a need they are passionate about in the world.

This may be by becoming a shoe-shiner who tells stories and makes people's day just by doing their job with love and vigour; it may be by becoming a coach who sees the light in a child’s eyes and guides them to pursue a dream; it may be by becoming a parent who leads their family on a Hero's Journey; it may be becoming an entrepreneur or business leader guided by compassion and integrity; or it may be by becoming an artist or writer who brings beauty to people's lives.
